The main man of the comic, he's been a librarian
for longer than there have been public libraries. A feared
opponent of evil, Rex was traumatized by the burning of the
library of Alexandria. As a result, he can take the protection
of books to absurd extremes. An expert shot, Rex spends his
spare time reading, weight training, and eating buttertarts.
He is often on a diet.
Simonides
A former sophist philosopher from Ancient
Greece, Simonides was turned into a bird by Circe some two
thousand years ago. The spell has yet to wear off. In the meantime,
Simonides plots world domination in order cover up his avian
inferiority complex. He's about as grounded as you'd expect
a bird to be.
Circe
Reformed sorceress, Circe joined the Secret
Order of Librarians after escaping from the Salem Witch trials.
She works at Rex's side, and her abilities add greatly to the
ability of the library to retrieve books from supernatural
borrowers. Unfortunately, her fierce temper can wind up causing
catastrophic consequences for the library administrator. She
enjoys martial arts, black magic, collecting recipes, and baking
cookies.
Hypatia
A new addition to the Middleton Library,
Hypatia Krupskaya has just earned her MLIS. An expert in close
quarters combat and a whiz with technology, she has an encyclopedic
memory unhindered by two thousand years of experience and short
telomeres. Hypatia is eager to prove herself to the older members
of the Middleton branch, whom she fondly refers to as 'those
pastry-eating ossified dinosaurs.'
Thoth
The rarely seen library administrator, the
former Egyptian god of writing handles the executive decisions
at the Middleton branch. He was entrusted long ago with keeping
safe the most dangerous books ever written, and to prevent
them from falling into the wicked hands of Cthonian abominations.
Over the centuries he has aided the super secret Library Order,
which he helped found, and enlisted into its ranks some of
history's most brilliant and dangerous characters. Known for
being cranky and having an odd obsession with dust arrangement,
Mr. Thoth nevertheless provides the Middleton staff with a
wide assortment of magical insurance policies that protect
them from various forms of harm. He likes rich coffees and
blueberry muffins.
Sphinx (Xee)
The guardian of Thoth's inner sanctum, the
Sphinx enjoys telling riddles, dismembering and devouring trespassers,
eating flesh off the bone, reading romance books, and playing
poker and scrabble. Some thirty feet tall, she can leap well
over a hundred feet in a single bound. Her claws can decapitate
a Thracian warrior, or even a group of tightly packed Thracians,
with one swipe. No one ever wears long scarves or other dangling
articles of clothing within eyesight of Xee twice.
