Nil is a bizarre place populated by dysfunctional beings, most of whom wear black. Cynicism is quite popular, and most characters are melancholic or phlegmatic in disposition. Bright, cheery personality types are culled at a young age. Some of the inhabitants are described below.
Characters
PROUN NUL
Mr. Nul works aboard the deconstruction ship Derrida, demolishing belief outbreaks as they occur. Modest, colourless, and dull, Mr. Nul is a non-presence in the world. Born in the ruins of Nihilopolis IX, he grew up in various state managed orphanages. After graduating from No Future High School, he went on to study demolition at Nihilopolis University, where he put his adolescent anger and angst to good purpose. He won the Controlled Implosion Award and the prestigious Cunroe Nihilist Achievement Cup. After graduation he was recruited by the Demolition Service and quickly promoted thanks to his indifferent attitude and aptitude with explosives. He has no known living relatives, and as of this writing, resides in Nihilopolis X.
Ms. VOID
Miss Void was born in Nul York to a socially prominent family. She won the DeLilo Disbelief Scholarship and attended Nihilopolis University, where she studied the Inhumanities. After learning that nothing can be learned and nothing can be known, she left school and joined the staff of The New Nihilopolis Times. She wrote a column for them for three years before her disaffection attracted the attention of the Ministry of Disillusionment. She was subsequently hired as an office worker and remains with the department to this day.
Mr. MUK
Mr. Muk is a hard boiled detective with The Special Case Army of the Hell Police Department. He and his partner Mr. Puk work together trying to solve the unsanctioned crimes that occur in the Infernal Realm. Punishment is strictly controlled and delegated according to sin, and any excess must be strictly monitored. As inmates are not allowed to dole out punishment of their own accord, those who do transgress must be found and punished. Post-sin sin is prohibited. For this task Mr. Muk is well suited, being blessed with an eye for detail, which makes him one of the top 10,000 demons in his case division. He has solved some thirteen thousand homicides since achieving the rank of detective, and shows no sign of slowing down. Hell has twice awarded him with the Sissyphean Badge of Merit, each time doubling his case load.
Mr. BLIX
Phineas Tiberius Blix grew up in Negaton, in the North of Nil, where he tortured small woodland animals as a child. A disobedient, defiant youth, he had several run-ins with Enforcers during his high school years, which landed him a scholarship at Nihilopolis University, where he joined the Young Nihilists and became a follower of Doctor Thanatos Toten. His pitiless, vulturine attitude in Demolition Studies and the Inhumanities won him several awards, including a lump of rock given to him personally by the Hypocripope. He went on to join the Demolition Ministry and spearhead the Undermine Project.
